How is the college game different than the NBA?

Specifically, why do players like J.J. Redick, Adam Morrision, and Tyler Hansbrough play better than almost everyone in college but become bench players in the NBA? I mean, they competed against future NBA players in college, didn't they? So how can one explain this?|||It really is a matter of the overall level of skill, change in defense, and level of physicality in the nba.

In the nba, some 20 or so draft picks every year really manage to stay in the nba for more than a few seasons. THat means that all but the very best college players are funeled out of the league. Being one of the top 10 or 20 players in college means nothing when every guy pretty much was the college superstar.

Secondly, in the nba, unlike college, teams are constantly scouting their opponenst and will find weaknesses in your game. If you cannot pass of the dribble, drive left, finish with your right, or shoot dead on, they will find your weaknesses and exploit it. You must be a very good all around player to avoid being nullified, lopsided games can get you to the nba, but they cannot sustain you for hte msot part.

The shooting is much better, a mid range jumper is a little inside the college three, you may be a big shooter and scorer in college, but does your range really go far enough? do you really defend your guy well enough to stop them from getting open nba threes, or college heaves.

THe defense is harder. it is primarily man to man, with more complicated help systems that rely on much more studying and basketball intelligence. The players are much stronger, and faster, and it is like guarding a college star all the time every day. any defensive weakness and youre career with most teams is over, you play the position you can defend, usually, and if you cannot guard your guy, which is really very hard, then your done.

FInally, the level of physical talent in the nba is immense. The athletes are spectacular all around, and the foot work of many big men exceeds that of the average college guard. The entire league is clever, knows how to get you to make college mistakes, and are just super athletic.

it doesn't matter how well you shoot in college, you will always be defended by,"that super fast star from the other team", as the league is ripe with them. It you cannot open yourself up off screans, or get that extra step, you are useless. THe athleticism makes defense much more difficult and scorers in college are much less versatile in need than a scorer in the nba.

finally, as i just said, being a real star and stud, which alot of these draftees have been all throughout their careers, doesn't make you an nba stud. Even if you are athletic, you almost never can get off on that, unilike most otehr levels. You have to work and work, because you are not hte top dog anymore, everyone is like you in theri college careers, and have had years more to learn veteran moves, adjust themeselves and improve their game.

Alot of players are discouraged by the fact that the jump is so huge and they are not the guys anymore, the nba is just a much higher individual talnt level as the league is so small and selective.

hope this helped clarify|||well a simple analogy is college basketball is a lot like high school basketball. the nba is alot like a pick up game

college ball is a grind it out game. teams run plays like a religion and almost 95% of colege teams have a deap commitment on the defensive end. making the scores lower. also the leading scorer on a college team usually isnt up in the 30's. they generally average maybe 16 a game. college takes more brains than athletic ability. guys like redick and hansbrough can make up for their lack of athletic ability by using their fundamentals to put themselves above the pack

in the nba you have to be able to jump out of the gym, play solid defense against the guys at your position, knock down an open j,as well as have knowledge about how to play. those are requirements not a lot of guys coming into the league can do. theres alot of guys who are athletic like no other but dont have any smarts when it comes to the game, nor can they hit an opne jumper. then theres guys like redick who were tought by the best, good basketball I.Q.,terrific shooter but has no athletic ability, not a solid perimiter defender, and cant create his own shot|||in the nba you have 82 games to play compare to ncaa you have like 30 its more physical play and stronger players then you can play for a team but can't adjust to the system. Lets take JJ Redick for a second at Duke he was the first option and knew he would get 18 to 20 shots a game. In the nba he may be the fourth option on the floor with 6 shots in the whole game now comes pressure to score.|||college doesn't have as many 7 footers compared to the nba and there are way more college teams than the nba

plus, the nba players are way stronger than the college players

look at dwight,in high school,he was a skinny center with no fat,now he is the strongest nba player

plus in the nba,you play more minutes and you run more since you have only 24 seconds per possession compared to the college level, you have 35

don't forget,in the nba,the players have more skills and some are just too athletic but college has more athletic players

it's mostly since in the nba, they are taller and stronger and the shot clock|||College they let u get away with more fouls, they have a longer shot clock and the talent is more spread out. Every team doesnt have an NBA player on it. In The NBA every player is at a high caliber, they are stronger, and its a much faster game, less team oriented, and more about individuals. Reddick, and Morrison can be locked down, because they use to just catch and shoot, they cant create their own shot. We dont know how Ty Bro will do yet.
